across the river with a wolf, a goat, a cabbage

Were you ever asked to solve a puzzle like that?

You own a wolf, a goat, and a cabbage. You need to take these three belongings across the river. All you have available to solve that problem is one little boat, which can carry you and only one of the three things at a time.

Of course you can't leave the wolf and the goat alone, or the goat and the cabbage. So you have to take the goat across first. Then go back to get the cabbage. Drop of the cabbage, but on your trip back take the goat with you again. Then leave the goat behind, while you row across with your wolf. Finally your last trip will be for the goat again.

Getting our weekend planned out felt like that puzzle for me today.

Tom and I wanted to go to Lake Michigan again, and this time Mollie had agreed to come with us - but only if she was allowed to bring Jared, her current boyfriend. I suggested, that we rent two rooms at the Comfort Inn in Portage, where Tom and I stayed over Memorial Day. One room for Tom and myself, one room for Mollie and her boyfriend.

And that is, where the wolf, the goat, and the cabbage came into play:

  • Tom didn't want to have his teenage daughter sleep with her teenage boyfriend (so he suggested one room for the four of us, plus our dog)
  • I didn't want to give up all privacy, and put up with a teenage couple, sharing one bedroom with everybody (so I suggested we leave early Sunday morning and don't stay at a hotel at all)
  • Mollie didn't want to go without her boyfriend, and she didn't want to go if we wouldn't stay over night (so she started throwing a fit)

Tom was getting ready to call off the entire trip - but I don't give up that easily. Remembering the wolf, the goat, and the cabbage, I came up with an acceptable solution. We now have two rooms at that hotel. A single room for Mollie's boyfriend, and a double room for the rest of us.
